Woman, sat on the sofa checking her phone for government grants.

With rising energy costs and a growing demand for low-carbon heating, many homeowners are now turning to government-backed grants to help fund upgrades.

From boiler replacements to full renewable systems like air source heat pumps, there’s genuine financial support available — but knowing which schemes apply to you can be confusing.

This guide breaks down the key grants available in 2025, who might be eligible, and how working with Somerset Gas — an MCS, TrustMark, and HIES-approved installer — can help you access them.

Why Do Accreditations Matter for Grants?

In short, because the government wants to ensure that installations are safe, effective, and delivered to a high standard. That’s where companies like Somerset Gas come in.

We are:

  • MCS Accredited – meaning we meet strict standards for renewable installations (required for many funding schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme)

  • TrustMark Registered – a government-endorsed quality scheme covering workmanship, customer service and consumer protection

  • HIES Members – offering added peace of mind through independent dispute resolution and consumer insurance backing

These accreditations aren’t just badges — they give you direct access to funding that would otherwise be off-limits.

What Grants Are Available in 2025?

Here’s a breakdown of the major schemes available right now for eligible UK households:

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

This is the government’s flagship grant for homeowners looking to upgrade to a low-carbon heating system.

  • What it covers:A grant of £7,500 towards the cost of an air source heat pump (or ground source heat pump in some cases)

  • Who qualifies:

    • Homeowners and small landlords in England and Wales

    • A valid EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) with no outstanding insulation recommendations

    • Replacing an oil, gas or electric system

  • Installer requirement:You must use an MCS-certified installer (like Somerset Gas)

If you're exploring renewables, this is by far the most generous and accessible grant available, and it's available now.

ECO4 Scheme

ECO4 is focused on improving the energy efficiency of low-income and fuel-poor households. It’s one of the longest-running energy support programmes in the UK.

  • What it covers:

    • New high-efficiency gas or oil boilers

    • Insulation upgrades (loft, cavity, external wall)

    • Heating system replacements (e.g. from electric to central heating)

  • Who qualifies:

    • Households receiving benefits (e.g. Universal Credit, Pension Credit)

    • EPC rating E, F or G

    • Certain flexibility options via LA Flex (even if you're not on benefits)

  • Installer requirement:Must be TrustMark registered (Somerset Gas is)

ECO4 is particularly valuable for older homes with poor insulation or outdated heating.

Great British Insulation Scheme (formerly ECO+)

A newer scheme designed for middle-income households who may not qualify for ECO4 but still live in homes that are expensive to heat.

  • What it covers: Primarily loft and cavity wall insulation

  • Who qualifies:

    • Homes in Council Tax bands A–D (in England)

    • EPC ratings D or lower

    • No benefits required in many cases

  • Installer requirement: TrustMark-registered company

Even smaller upgrades like insulation can help improve your EPC and open the door to further support.
